As a consequence of a deeply dominant pattern of behaviour in the life sciences, we've become very adept at looking at the parts of living things, but paradoxically, it's taking us further from understanding what makes something alive. If you find yourself feeling like populist science is making things appear more dead and meaningless, then you should come to trust that intuition. When I became a doctor I hadn't imagined I'd be a researcher and certainly not a YouTuber. I just wanted to be able to get on with the job of doctoring as well as possible. In an ideal world, with the phenomenal resources being spent on medical research, a constant stream of high quality information should be getting passed onto the frontline of healthcare and improving our capacity to assist people to heal. Increasingly this isn’t the reality and consequently I’ve had to become a researcher in order to be able to do my job as well as possible. I’ve become a YouTuber because unexpectedly it’s become the best option for presenting a large body of work in as coherent a manner as possible.
